This is a blood test that measures the amount of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) in the blood stream of a individual or child with an associated tumor.
The "Serial Monitor" component allows for a evaluation of past and present results to be combined into a single result.
AFP is a protein normally produced by the liver and yolk sac of a fetus. AFP levels decrease soon after birth; AFP probably has no normal function in adults.
